Why We Built Expertini Research

The impetus for this platform came from a place many researchers know intimately. Dr Ahsan Habibi Syed, while pursuing doctoral research in cybersecurity investment planning at De Montfort University, found himself navigating a publishing landscape that felt increasingly misaligned with the actual pace of research. Journals moved slowly. Preprint servers in his field felt either too narrow or too dominated by established institutional voices. Meaningful work — particularly from independent researchers, practitioners, and students in non-Western institutions — often went unarchived, uncited, and unseen.

"There is an enormous amount of rigorous, honest intellectual work being done outside the traditional academic pipeline — by PhD students who cannot afford article processing charges, by industry researchers whose findings never reach the public, by students whose theses disappear into institutional repositories no search engine ever crawls. That struck me as a real problem worth solving." — Founding perspective behind Expertini Research

The academic publishing system, for all its value, carries structural barriers that are easy to overlook if you have always been inside a well-resourced institution. Article processing charges can run into thousands of dollars per paper. Peer review cycles routinely stretch beyond twelve months. Pre-submission requirements demand institutional affiliation. Embargo periods delay public access to publicly funded research by years.

None of these barriers exist to protect research quality. They exist because of how the publishing industry evolved — and they disproportionately exclude the researchers who have the least margin for error: early-career academics, researchers in lower-income countries, practitioners working outside universities, and students whose work deserves an audience even before it clears a peer review queue.

Expertini, having spent over fifteen years building technology to connect people with opportunities across 150+ countries, was well placed to do something about it. We already had the infrastructure, the global reach, and the technical capability. What the world needed was a platform that treated research sharing the way it should be treated: as a public good, not a subscription service.

What We Are — and What We Are Not

Expertini Research is an open preprint and working paper repository. We are not a journal. We do not conduct peer review as part of our standard publication process. This distinction matters enormously, and we make it explicit on every paper page, in every citation export, and throughout our platform.

What this means in practice: most papers published here are preprints — they have not been vetted by external reviewers. Readers should interpret them accordingly: as contributions to ongoing conversations in a field, not as settled findings. This is precisely how preprints function at arXiv, bioRxiv, SSRN, and other established repositories, and it is a model that has proven enormously valuable for accelerating scientific communication.

The one exception: we do accept papers marked as peer-reviewed, but only where the author can confirm that the work has been accepted by or published in a recognised, industry-standard journal. Acceptable examples include publications indexed in journals of the calibre of The Lancet, Nature, Elsevier family journals, IEEE Transactions, ACM Digital Library, and equivalents in their respective fields. We do not rubber-stamp the peer-reviewed badge — it is a claim made by the author and the responsibility for its accuracy rests with them.

What We Cover

Unlike repositories that specialise in a single discipline, Expertini Research is genuinely multidisciplinary. We host outputs across nineteen research categories — from fundamental sciences to social sciences, from engineering to philosophy. This breadth is intentional: the most interesting research often happens at the boundaries between fields.

Our Connection to Expertini

Expertini Research is operated by Expertini — a global AI-powered job search and recruitment platform established in 2008, serving over 700,000 monthly users through 251 country-specific domains and more than 35 specialised job verticals. The platform operates at the intersection of technology and human employment: it is, at its core, a company that has spent nearly two decades thinking about how people and knowledge move through the world.

That experience shapes how we think about research publishing. We have seen how proprietary algorithms in hiring exclude candidates who do not fit narrow templates. We have seen how closed-access research on labour markets and AI systems shapes policy without ever reaching the practitioners those policies affect. Expertini Research is, in part, a response to those observations.

Expertini has itself contributed to the research literature — with papers on cybersecurity investment optimisation on the go with De Montfort University, and with industry research on AI-driven recruitment systems that has informed platform development across our network. We understand the publishing process from the inside, and we built this repository to serve researchers the way we would have wanted to be served when our own work was looking for a home.

We are not a neutral actor who stumbled into academic publishing. We are practitioners who understand the gap between where knowledge is produced and where it reaches — and who decided to do something about that gap.

Free Tools for Every Researcher

Publishing a paper is only the beginning. Discoverability, citation formatting, abstract quality, and Google Scholar indexing all require ongoing attention — and most researchers do not have dedicated support staff to handle them. We built a suite of free tools to fill that gap.

Our Principles

🔓
Radical Openness
No paywalls. No APCs. No embargo periods. Every paper published here is freely readable by anyone with an internet connection, from the moment it is published.
🏷️
Honest Labelling
Every paper displays its review status clearly. We never obscure the distinction between a preprint and a peer-reviewed article. Readers deserve to know what they are reading.
🌍
Geographic Neutrality
We do not privilege researchers from specific countries, institutions, or funding bodies. A student in Karachi and a professor in Cambridge have equal standing here.
📊
Metadata Integrity
We implement full Google Scholar citation meta tags on every paper. Your work is discoverable the moment it goes live — no waiting, no manual submission.
🔒
No Data Sales
Expertini Research do not sell researcher data. The platform is funded by Expertini's core business.
⚖️
Author Responsibility
We do not fact-check individual papers. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of their submissions. We remove content that violates our policies.
