The laboratorys mandate is threefold to build repositories of quantitative, qualitative and spatial data that tackle questions related to the urban space in India; to design and develop means of dissemination using various media that highlight key trends in Indias urbanisation story; and, to analyse and study the developments in the urban space in India, and create a space where such studies can be showcased. Job Description The Associate Urban Informatics Lab would be involved with various projects of the UIL, including leading and managing particular processes within the Lab. The incumbent would be required to apply statistical analysis techniques in solving urban problems in a data-scarce environment. The role will involve providing analytical support to IIHS research and practice projects, and for teaching quantitative research methods. The Associate will work with secondary data sets from various sources such as the Census, NSSO, Economic Census, Annual Survey of Industries, National Family Health Survey, as well as geo-spatial data from multiple sources. They will also assist in primary data collection through surveys. The Associate will be working on projects related to economic development, urban demographic trends across various scales, land markets, and urban food systems. Activities and Tasks Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following Proposing and executing quantitative solutions to various problems across IIHS research and practice projects; Application of known quantitative methodologies as well as development of new and innovative methodologies to build a deeper understanding of urban India; Assistance with collection of primary data, as well as preparation of secondary data for analysis collation, cleaning and validation; Preparation of outward-facing materials and presentations on key urban demographic and economic trends; Translation of insights from quantitative analysis for academic writing, practice reports, and popular media, including thinking through data design and communication; Assisting with writing reports, academic papers and other outputs; Providing assistance on teaching particular aspects of quantitative research methods or data visualization for IIHS teaching and training programs; Other research and institutional tasks as and when required. Structure and Reporting The Associate Urban Informatics Lab will report to the Senior Consultant in charge of the Urban Informatics Lab at IIHS and will be required to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organizations, and students. Person Specification Applicants should have 3 to 5 years of work experience in any of the following applied economics, applied statistics, software coding in the development sector, or information science including data design and communication. They must be comfortable working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment and must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Other qualifications required for this role, include Post-Graduate education in Economics / Mathematics / Statistics / Development Studies / Urban Planning / Public Policy with strong skills in Data Analysis; GIS and coding skills are an added advantage; Proficiency in Excel/ STATA/ R/ SPSS; Familiarity with design software is an added advantage; Prior exposure to the datasets mentioned above; Interest in urban centric research; The ability to work with inter-disciplinary teams; Teaching experience is an added advantage.
