Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been selected by Western Sydney Airport Co as its Delivery Partner for the Western Sydney Airport, a $5.3 billion greenfield facility in Badgerys Creek, New South Wales.
This will be a landmark project for both New South Wales and Australia and is due for completion at the end of 2026.
Western Sydney Airport will provide much-needed additional aviation capacity to meet growing demand in the Sydney basin and improve access to flights for people in Western Sydney.

+ Bechtel is seeking a Design Manager for the Western Sydney Airport Project located in Badgerys Creek, Western Sydney, Australia.
+ The Design Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating and directing activities and has technical accountability for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating the engineering work on a large complex infrastructure project.
+ The Design Manager works within an integrated client project management team and is accountable for the timely delivery of the design work packages developed by 3rd Party engineering consultants and/or design and construct contractors.
+ Reports to the assigned Package Manager and ensures the designers deliver to the Project schedule.
+ Receives operational supervision from the Project Engineering Manager.
The Design Manager is a key individual helping the Delivery Partner’s (DPs) role in providing Project Management services and deliverables. In performing this role, the Design Manager will be familiar with the contract terms, scope, and requirements and will work as part of the broader DP package management team to fulfill the DP obligations.
# About the role:
+ Directs and provides technical and administrative guidance to assigned Package, discipline and consultant Engineers in the management of engineering on the project.
+ Keeps informed on the status of all project issues involving assigned personnel with respect to schedule, budget, work quality and client satisfaction and contributes leadership, experience and expertise in the solution of difficult problems.
+ Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
+ Reports to the Package Manager and Project Engineering Manager on design performance on cost, progress, performance, risk and technical issues.
+ Performs work using appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools.
+ Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of current trends and implements this into practices and procedures.
+ Experienced in providing a lead technical role over other engineers or project subgroups for completing specific tasks.
+ Coordinates, facilitates and manages interfaces both internal and external.
+ Manages and monitors 3rd Party designer’s performance with relation to schedule and cost control.
+ Coordinates review and client acceptance of 3rd Party produced design documents.
+ Coordinates supply of technical information to the designer to allow the programme to progress.
+ Reviews major changes or deviations in project scope, project material quantities, budget or schedule, and assists particularly with defining the change, obtaining accurate estimates of the hours involved, and recommending budget adjustment.
+ Knowledge and experience of the complex interfaces with large infrastructure projects and the detailed design prepared by multiple design contractors on projects.
+ Monitors the use of available engineering computer programs, technical advances and engineering management control techniques on the projects assigned.
+ Works closely with the client team and stakeholders on matters relating to design progress and quality.
+ Champions the creation of a work environment, helped by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction on the project or program.
# What you bring:
+ A recognized degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited college or university, specialized courses in relevant engineering, or appropriate discipline.
+ A professional license in an engineering discipline or a license to practice architecture from a recognized licensing board is preferred.
+ Minimum of 10 plus years of practical work experience in design engineering or relevant equivalent experience.
+ Must have strong aviation industry experience, experience in Australia preferred.
+ Experience managing design efforts including management of 3rd Party designers or engineers with a minimum of 2 aviation projects.
+ Broad knowledge of aviation industry/regulatory codes and standards, project controls and design criteria in all engineering disciplines.
+ Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials and applications of building information modelling, 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) to engineering problems.
+ Proficient knowledge of activities and operations in other functions including construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
+ Extensive progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in the project and staff design engineering or architectural design or other relevant types of engineering such as systems start-up, field engineering or engineering/construction firms.
