**Job Description**

**The Position**

This is an externally facing role that will focus on corporate communications, reputation management, public affairs and public relations strategy and execution across all our business units.

The candidate will be responsible for driving proactive media relations to assert Gilead’s reputation and leadership, in addition to managing issues and hot topics. The role also includes engagement with patient advocacy and community groups to understand barriers and opportunities to improve care and collaborate on areas of shared interest, in conjunction with the Medical Affairs team.

This role resides in our Region 1 market cluster. Region 1 is comprised of seven markets including Australia, Switzerland, the Nordics, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria & Israel. The role is based at our headquarters in Melbourne, and will require travel across Australia, based on business needs. Occasional travel to Europe and the United States will also be required.

The position reports directly to the Senior Director, Public Affairs for Region 1 (based in Stockley Park, UK). The candidate will work in close collaboration with the Senior Director, Government Affairs ANZ to ensure alignment with our external affairs strategy and optimize communications to key stakeholders. In addition, the role will work closely with members of the ANZ Leadership Team, including the General Manager, Medical head, Market Access head as well as our Business Unit Directors.

For candidates with proven public affairs and communications expertise, this role provides an ideal opportunity to establish our Public Affairs function in Australia, as well as shaping the external environment to foster a positive environment for innovation and enable broad patient access to our medicines.

**Job Duties**

**Corporate Affairs**

+ Develop and implement a proactive Corporate Affairs approach for Gilead ANZ including development of a narrative that resonates with multi-disciplinary stakeholders and tells the story of our science, innovations, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and future aspirations in Australia & New Zealand

+ Continuously scanning the environment to proactively identify and manage issues

**Media Relations & Messaging**

+ Manage all aspects of media relations including building relationships with key media, assessing media opportunities, developing media and adjacent key stakeholder responses (HCPs, health agencies, policy/Government, patient advocacy groups, community), preparing Gilead spokespeople for interviews

+ Serve as Gilead ANZ press office, with agency support

**Business Unit Therapeutic Area Communications**

+ Efficiently drive Business Unit Public Affairs plans (therapy area communications including data and regulatory milestones, media issues responses) that show value to the business and to our stakeholders

+ Advising Business Units on areas where Public Affairs can have the greatest impact on stakeholder outcomes

+ Understanding the regulatory frameworks in ANZ and compliantly managing internal approvals and interactions with reviewers

**Patient Advocacy Group Relations**

+ Develop/strengthen relationships with a wide variety of community advocates in the areas of HIV, hepatitis C, inflammation and oncology to ensure patient needs are appropriately represented in our company programmes

+ Collaborate with Medical Affairs on advisory boards and Corporate Social Responsibility programmes

**Cross-Functional Collaboration**

+ Collaborate cross-functionally locally, regionally and globally with Gilead teams

+ Build strong relationships with Public Affairs colleagues in Foster City, California (Gilead’s Global HQ) and Stockley Park, UK (Gilead’s ACE/Australia, Canada, Europe HQ)

+ Participate in the ANZ Grants Review Committee, reviewing and advising on patient advocacy groups and community grants

**Agency Management**

+ Effectively manage Gilead’s PA agency

+ Ensure the delivery of high-quality programmes and results on time and within budget

**Skills**

+ 10 years’ Communications skills (public affairs, public relations, corporate affairs) in a corporation, NGO or public relations agency

+ Strong executive presence (gravitas) with ability to command respect, clearly and credibly convey your point of view with both internal and external stakeholders

+ Demonstrated experience in media relations (traditional and social) and issues management

+ Strong writer and editor with first-rate communication skills

+ Experience working successfully with patient organisations

+ Ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders in Foster City, California and Stockley Park, UK

+ Sound business judgement and operates to high ethical standards

+ Comfortable working in fast-paced, unpredictable environment, with a geographically and culturally diverse team
